Needle Punch Embroidery ~ My Way March, 2024

Last October, I finally learned how to needle punch . Something I”ve wanted to do for years. It didn’t take long for me to get the hang of it, and soon started dreaming up my own designs.

Also, I soon realized that I truly favor the “working side” of every piece that I did. Everyone who is familiar with needle punch knows the traditional way to display a needle punch piece, is the other, loopy side. But, anyone who knows me , knows that I am unruly and like to go against the normal way of doing things.

I really enjoy dreaming up new patterns and strive to be different, while using antique rugs and other early folk art mediums as inspiration.

As for me, the raw, imperfect “stitches” form an endearing look and feel to each piece. As ever, you can focus on whichever side that you like. It’s simply a preference. Loopy , or primitive stitch look , it’s all good !

The little goat pillow above was actually from a larger piece that I did, but, I didn’t like what I had done around the goat section. It was too busy. But, I didn’ want it to go to a complete waste, so, I cut the goat section out and stitched onto a little pillow. I used to have a sweet little brown goat like this. Her name was Mabel.
ps… this is not a pattern that I have available at this time.

I do realize that there are many lovely folks out there that have online lessons on how to needle punch, but, I learned from Lori Brechlin of Notforgotten Farm. One of the reasons I put off learning how to punch for so long, was the worry that my hands could not handle doing so, as I’ve had carpal tunnel surgery in the past. When I saw the new Smart punch, I gave it a try and it really is comfortable to handle.

So far, I have only used Valdani #8 pearl cotton threads in my work. They offer lovely colors, although, always too new looking for me as I punch along, and always look forward to aging the finished work with my leftover morning coffee.
